Commercial Espresso Machine Installation Requirements

It is recommended to use a dry and well-ventilated surface, roughly 80 -120cm high, and to give yourself at least 1.5m of space all around the machine to make cleaning and maintenance easier.

Also remember to leave some space for your grinder, which is generally placed on the right side of the machine (for right-handed people).

Underneath of the machine you will want to have some available space for the filter, motor, and pump (if your machine has an external pump).

In order to connect these to your machine you will also want to have a hole of about 75mm drilled into your work bench, intended to be lined up with the middle of your machine.

Water

If your machine is fed directly by the plumbing line, you will want to have a licensed plumber to set this up for you.

And remember that most manufacturers will void the warranty on your machine if the water in your machine is not kept at 2-3 GPG.

Generally speaking espresso machines have inlet hoses with a 3/8″ female fitting which can be connected directly to a filter.

Power Supply

Again you are better off going with a licensed electrician than attempting to manage this on your own.

Most espresso machines will need a 240 volt single-phase power supply along with whatever current protection is specified by the machine itself.

Normally espresso machines have a long lead that comes out from the left side of the machine near the back, so your GPO should be located around the left side of the machine as well.

Most cafés will keep a power supply directly below the machine and run the cord up through the hole in the bench under the machine.

Another important thing to note about power is that if you live somewhere where water may affect your work environment than you must install weatherproof power switches.

Most commercial espresso machines tend to need a 15A-30A power supply, and some multi-boiler machines with 3-4 group heads may need a 40amp outlet installed. Home machines without a high output will generally need a 10A and 110v outlet. In any case we recommend dealing with a licensed electrician to sort all of this out for you.

Also please note that isn’t unusual for commercial coffee machines to come without a plug, so once again you will be relying on your electrician to supply and install a plug that is suitable for your machine and power supply.

Drain/Waste

For direct drainage you’ll need a drain-pipe with a trap, but 99% of the time commercial espresso machines will come with a drain hose included, typically about 1m in length.
